Why do I receive a 'No volume control elements and/or devices found' error?

If you receive the error "No volume control elements and/or devices found" when logging into the Fedora Core Gnome desktop of a CN1200, please do the following: 
su
rm -rf /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/apps/panel/applets/mixer/

Newer CN1200 installations have this done automatically.
